Mount Jinba to Mount Takao Hike
Yesterday we hiked from Mount Jinba to Mount Takao in western Tokyo. Took the JR train from Shinjuku station to Takao Station where we saw this giant Tengu statue.

Chain Lakes Hike, WA
In October, Sawako and I hiked the Chain Lakes loop trail by Mt Baker. This gorgeous trail has wonderful views of small alpine lakes along with Mounts Baker and Shuksan. A highlight was a Pika that posed for us.

Ucluelet and Tofino, Vancouver Island, Canada
After spending 3 days in Strathcona Park, we drove to the west side of Vancouver Island to the small towns of Ucluelet and Tofino. The drive over was interesting because we went through the town of Port Alberni which is located much closer to the east side of the island, but due to a big fjord, is actually a seaport on the west side.
We hiked along Wild Pacific Trail in Ucluelet where we had beautiful views and saw and enterprising blue heron fishing from floating driftwood. There was also a rare bog along the trail where we could see carniverous sundew plants.
We drove up to Tofino for a day and visited the Pacific Rim National Park visitor center where we heard a very good ranger talk about the predators in the area (50+ blackbears, 2 wolves and 4-5 cougars live between Ucluelet and Tofino. If you have time, I highly recommend this visitor center.
While we did not see any of the predators, we did see people surfing (must have been very cold), eagles, and seals.
The town of Tofino is a cross between resort area with very active seaplane service, many fishing boats, and ferry services to other communities on the island that do not have roads to them.

Strathcona Park, Vancouver Island, Canada
In late August, we took 6 day trip to Vancouver Island, Canada. The first three days are at Strathcona Provincial Park in the middle of the Island. You cannot tell you are on an island at all as it is so big. We stayed at Strathcona Lodge which is just outside the park and has a nice view up lake toward Crest Mountain (the high flat one in the middle of the photo).

Driveway Butte Hike
In June I took Sawako to the Methow Valley for birthday hiking. The main hike we did was Driveway Butte which is very, very steep. For about 2 miles the climb was over 1000ft/mile. At the top we hiked through a burn area from a 2003 wildfire. The views and wild flowers were worth the work getting to the top as it was beautiful

Pike's Peak and Garden of the Gods
To round out the Denver trip, we visited Pike's Peak, also know as America's Mountain. It is 14115ft high which is the highest either of us have been except for in a plane.
We took the Cog railway up to the top. The center rail has notches in it that the rail car gear hooks into to get up the steep grade. The railway has been running since 1891 although it was refurbished in 2017.
The views at the top are wonderful, even on a cloudy day
This is where Katharine Lee Bates was inspired to write the poem that became 'America the Beautiful'
After coming back down we ate at Manitou Springs which is named after several local carbonated water springs. Each one has a slightly different taste.

On the second day we returned to Bear Valley, but even though we had a reservation for 0800, we had to take the free shuttle bus as it was Saturday and the trail head parking was already full. This time we hiked to Mills Lake past a few waterfalls

West Tiger Mountain 1, 2, & 3
