There are 3 grand shrines, aka the Kumano Sanzen. To visit the last shrine, Hayatama Taisha, we took the train to Shingu. The shrine surrounded by trees was an oasis from the high winds in the streets.

Kumano Kodo Day 4: Koguchi to Nachisan
We met our Kodo 'family' hiking group at the trailhead at 0715 as this is the hardest day of the trek.

After a great breakfast, we got the 0840 bus to the Ukegawa trailhead.

Kumano Kodo Day 2: Chikatsuyu - Hongu
We left our wonderful Minshiku Chikatsuyu, highly recommended, and rode the bus to reduce our walking from 24 to 17km as it was supposed to rain all day.

Kumano Kodo Day 1: Takijiri - Chikatsuyu
The Kumano Kodo and the El Camino are the only two world heritage listed pilgrimages. You collect stamps along the way and if you do both of them, you get dual pilgrim status. There are several routes you can take. We walked the Nakahechi route that started in Takijiri.
