In late August, we took 6 day trip to Vancouver Island, Canada. The first three days are at Strathcona Provincial Park in the middle of the Island. You cannot tell you are on an island at all as it is so big. We stayed at Strathcona Lodge which is just outside the park and has a nice view up lake toward Crest Mountain (the high flat one in the middle of the photo).
The first day we decided to hike Crest Mountain. 4 miles and over 4000 ft of gain. Actually as 1.5 miles was around 500 ft of gain, the other 2.5 miles had 3500 ft of gain. Very, very steep. Wiped me out. Hardest part was coming down as my legs were tired and it was so steep. Took about 7.5 hours in total of which 6 hours was moving time. The top was pretty with one big lake and many smaller ones scattered about. Most folks stop and the big lake instead of hiking another mile to the summit. The summit has a notebook that Sawako signed for us and nice views in all directions.
The next day we hiked to Upper and Lower Myra Falls. While the falls were nice, the most interesting part was you had to drive through the recently active Myra Falls mining site and walk down a road with explosive storage areas to get to the trail head. On the way back, we hiked up Flower Ridge for a view of the mine in the valley.
On our last day in the park we drove to the Paradise Meadow area and hiked a few different loops. Overall a wonderful time and great hiking.
