Yesterday we hiked from Mount Jinba to Mount Takao in western Tokyo. Took the JR train from Shinjuku station to Takao Station where we saw this giant Tengu statue.
After Takao station we took a bus to the trailhead and then started up the trail to Mount Jinba. The first few miles were around 900 ft/mile and the trail was pretty rough. But once we got near the top it smoothed out. The trails are well marked so you cannot get lost.
Just before the top we saw a bear print. This is a big deal as Japanese bears are aggressive towards people with several deaths in Japan this year.
At the top of Mount Jinba (2812ft) we saw this statue and ate a nice udon noodle lunch at the small tea house.
Next we hiked the ridge over to Mount Kagenobu (2385ft) and enjoyed the views of the mountains and cities on the plain.
We continued hiking the ridge through Kabotake pass over to Mount Shiroyama (2160ft) where we had a snack among the fall colors at the tea house.
Finally we hiked over to Mount Takao (1965ft). Along the way we got our best view of Mount Fuji in the distance. Mount Takao is the most visited mountain in world as it has beautiful views, has a temple on top, and is very easy to get to from Tokyo.
We hiked across a suspension bridge and then took the lift back to the Takaosanguchi train station where we headed back to Tokyo. The total hike was 10 miles and 6.5 hours. The trains and busses took 5 hours.
