Kumano Kodo Day 5: Hayatama Taisha

There are 3 grand shrines, aka the Kumano Sanzen. To visit the last shrine, Hayatama Taisha, we took the train to Shingu. The shrine surrounded by trees was an oasis from the high winds in the streets.

The entrance to the shrine has a twisted rope to separate the sacred from non-sacred spaces.

Inside the main compound are shrines to various gods who people pray to for good luck, health, safety, etc.

As with most shrines, you can purchase omamori which are small amulets for good luck, health, traffic safety (yes the shrines update their omamori for current society), etc.

After visiting the shrine, we visited the Tankaku castle ruins for a nice view of the city and mountains.

We then stopped by a small bento shop in a person's home to get lunch for the train to Tokyo.

However, the winds were so strong on the coast, that all trains were cancelled. We were lucky that there was a long distance bus service a few blocks away. It was interesting though, that this bus service was NOT listed in Google maps, so none of the other foreigners were on it. I am very fortunate that Sawako is Japanese and can figure these things out. The bus ride was much longer than the train, but had some nice ocean views and we did make it home safely.
