Kumano Kodo Day 2: Chikatsuyu - Hongu

We left our wonderful Minshiku Chikatsuyu, highly recommended, and rode the bus to reduce our walking from 24 to 17km as it was supposed to rain all day.

The trail started with a steep climb to detour pass and then down the other side to Jagara Jizo.

We walked with a group that all got off the bus at the same time.

We passed Yukawa-oji and the Michinokawa town ruins.

More walking brought us to Inohana-oji and Hosshinmon-oji. Oji's are subsidiary shrines of the main shrine.

We had lunch at Fushiogami-oji.

Shortly after we left, we saw the grand torii gate (highest in Japan) of Hongo Taisha, the first of the three main shrines.

The rain started pouring down as we walked down the hill to it. The shrine is beautiful, even in the rain.

The shrine was moved after a flood to higher ground, but they left the main torii gate in the original location. We left the shrine to see the main Torii gate - 33.9m meters high.

We wrapped up the day at the Fujiya-mae onsen which is on a river with hot water. Wonderful dinner and then bed.
