New Zealand - Day 6

Today was a rest day after the big hike yesterday. We drove to Wellington where we will get a plane to the South Island tomorrow.  On the drive we stopped by a whimsical park celebrating the local vegetable farmers and a memorial for a train crash due to a lahar in 1953.

It was interesting to read about all the measures they took to avoid another disaster (raising and strengthening bridges, early working system, etc.). These worked as no one was injured in the 2007 lahar.

In Wellington, Sawako and I hiked to the top of Mt Victoria for a beautiful view of the city and its airport.

The park was incredible with lots of Tuis and other birds along with some really interesting exercise equipment.

You're suppose to walk on top of the posts.

And can anyone figure out what is so special about this picture taken on a park trail.

We finished up with a wonderful dinner at the Shed 5 restaurant on the waterfront.  I am still processing the idea of Christmas trees in the summer though (and it really does feel like summer here).

As for the picture, perhaps this will provide you a hint.

Yes, that trail and tree is where Frodo yelled 'Get off the Road' just before a black rider shows up in the Fellowship of the Ring.
