I learned about Dr Yellow, the special diagnostic Shinkansen that travels over the JR West and Central lines on no particular schedule monitoring the condition of the tracks and overhead wires.

These have been running for over 60 years assuring that the track infrastructure is in good condition. One important job they had was to pass over any Shinkansen tracks that may have been affected by an earthquake to make sure they were safe for the passenger trains. This is a major reason why Shinkansen have the best safety record of any transportation system in the world with zero fatalities and delays measured in fractions of a minute since 1964.
Because they do not have a set schedule and they are yellow (a color that symbolizes happiness in Japan), it is considered good luck if you are fortunate enough to see them.
Unfortunately, JR Central is stopping these trains this month and JR West in 2027 and putting their equipment onto normal passenger Shinkansen trains due to their age.
