Hikarigaoka Farm

Hikarigaoka has over 11,000 apartments in 10 - 25 story buildings surrounding a large mall with the big park just to the north of it. In other words it is a very urban area. What is amazing to me is that a short, 10 minute walk away there is a large farm that never sold out to developers

Farm house is on the left in the middle with the blue roof.  Greenhouses middle top and lower right.

Main farmhouse, there is an orchard to the left

Greenhouses for tomatoes

The farm sells is produce via large vending machines.  They have 3 areas with these vending machines. They fill the machines up in the morning and in the evening they are mostly empty so you know you are getting fruits and vegetables that were picked that day.

Sawako with komatsuna (like spinach) and beets

$2 for a nice bag of fresh, ripe, very tasty cherry tomatoes

You pay at the orange area above and then open the door for the item you want.  We get carrots, beets, tomatoes, mikans, cauliflower, cabbage, and more from the farm. Can you imagine something like this in New York City or on Capital Hill in Seattle?
