Day 7: Temples 20 - 22

Off at 0730 to climb 2 mountains, each one with a temple on top. Found a dime size blister on my left foot which will make it a wee more difficult. The hike to temple 20 wasn't too bad - just 1.5 km of steps. You can see the town where we started from.

We did the 3km in 1 hour. The foot felt ok also. Temple 20, Kakurinji was very quiet and peaceful in the woods. The hike down to the river before going up to the next temple was very steep, but most of it was stairs. Very pretty in the forest.Temple 21, Tairyūji was fantastic. It is a very large complex with a ropeway to bring people to it. We had a nice lunch, provided by our last host, under the cherry blossoms.

While eating lunch we met Amogine from France who is also planning to do the entire route. On our way to Temple 22, Byōdōji, we passed 88 statues, one for each temple on the pilgrimage. We also saw a large Buddha statue on the mountain.

We walked 20.1km today with 944m of altitude gain. You can see a map of my tracks here (you may have to refresh the page after a minute to get it to show).  If you have Google Earth, it is faster to download a Google Earth file of my adventure from here.
