Before we left Idoji, we met a group of gentlemen we called the three musketeers. They belong to a hiking club and are doing it in sections. They leave on a train after Tatsueji, temple 19. We have seen them at several temples.
Very long day today. The balls of my feet are very sore. It was a good day though as we met lots of wonderful people along the way. Temple 18, Onzanji was a 5h walk away. Lots of busy roads and very confusing directions.
The walk initially took us around a big hill with many shrines on it. We stopped for a strawberry sweet as the walk was so long. When we crossed a river we saw a pea patch. Much of the walk was along a busy highway. Once we got off the highway, we saw a very old marker.
At temple 18 we saw Luigi again. Between 18 and 19, we. met a farmer that grows mikans and bamboo shoots. He showed us how bamboo shoots for eating are grown and picked using a cool monorail system. Next we met a guy from a different Buddhist sect who tried to convince that the pilgrimage was bad karma. Here he is trying to convince another pilgrim. Then we met some people who set up a rest stop for pilgrims.
After Temple 19, Tatsueji, we had another 3h to walk to reach out lodging for the night. Luigi is staying in the same place.
We walked 37km today. You can see a map of my tracks here (you may have to refresh the page after a minute to get it to show). If you have Google Earth, it is faster to download a Google Earth file of my adventure from here.
