Day: 36 Temples 50, 51, and sightseeing

Cloudy day for temples and sightseeing. The way to Temple 50, Hantaji, was marked by these cute signs. The temple was quiet and next to a greenbelt.

Second temple, Temple 51, Ishiteji, had special henro bridge and some cute cats.

The rope things on either side of the gate are Owaraji which are big straw sandals to keep out demons..

This temple is built next to a rock hill. They had a special cave that Sawako explored, but the ceiling required me to bend way over so I stayed outside.

After the temple we hiked up and over the rock to our hotel next to Dogo Onsen, one of the oldest onsens in Japan. It even has a special section with a separate door that is only used by the emperor. Next to it was a colorful plaza.

Then we visited Matsuyama castle. It is up on a high hill so we took a chairlift to access it. This castle was built for defense forcing attackers through 4 gates and along narrow passages to get in.

Inside the castle they displayed armor and some samurai swords made by the first sword maker who was declared a Japanese Living National Treasure. The view from the top was great.

One of the unique tourist things in Matsuyama is juice from a faucet. You see versions of these all over including inside our hotel.

Back to the hotel, founded in 1868, where after dinner Sawako tried her hand at Noh, a traditional Japanese performing art.

I walked 14.8m today. You can see a map of my tracks here (you may have to refresh the page after a minute to get it to show).  If you have Google Earth, it is faster to download a Google Earth file of my adventure from here.
