Day 32: Into the mountains

Long day today, but good weather and mostly flat roads. First we walked through several km of a street lined with strip malls which were strange to see in Japan. We talked with a man using a self serve rice machine to polish rice turning brown rice into white rice. The machines were set up for small farmers, but he just bought brown rice as it only cost 100 yen to polish 22lbs if rice which is cheaper than buying white rice.

Put the brown rice in here

Put in 100 yen and press the button for how much of the bran to remove

White rice results

Another thing I noticed is that gas stations include repair shops. Don't see that in the US anymore.

We left the strip mall area and started walking through small villages. We met this man who told us about his family and gave us some homemade mochi which was very good.

After that we took a trail over a hill where we met this guy picking tea leaves for green tea. He steams them and dries them for tea.

In another village we saw these koinobori, carp-shaped windsocks, hanging from a bridge for childrens day which happens on May 5th and a nice school that included a sumo Dohyō.

Dinner was very good.

I walked 33.9km today. You can see my Gaia GPS tracks at Gaia GPS.
