Volunteering - Tunnel Marathon

A few days ago I volunteered to work an aid station at the Tunnel Marathon held at Snoqualmie Pass in Washington State.

The person in the lime jersey is a pacer (a 3h30m pace for this one).  They have pacers every 20 - 30 minutes to help the runners keep steady pace.  It was a bit wet this day so several folks dropped out as the marathon is run 3 times a year.

The course starts and then goes east along the lake to a turn around point, then back to the starting point, into the tunnel and down the hill from the pass.  The course is along an old railroad that was converted to a wonderful, packed gravel trail.

This Marathon is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon, and since much of it is downhill, lots of people like to run in it from all over the US.  The aid station is composed of three tables.  The table in the middle has energy gel packs while the table with the blue containers has water and the one with the orange container has an electrolyte drink.

The runners range from people seriously trying to qualify (they don't stop, just grab something on the run and then drop it on the track) to ones who just want to finish (they stop, empty the cup, say thankyou and head on down the trail).
