I have been up for around 36 hours now after a long flight from Tokyo to Auckland that landed in the morning. We were sent off my this little security robot trolling the Narita Airport. Not sure what kind of bait it was using though...
Getting from the Airport to Auckland via public transit is a bit confusing as there are multiple bus lines that stop at 2 different locations plus Google maps tells you to go to a third location part way down one of the bus lines. Go figure. This is what we saw when we got off at the Auckland train station.
On the way to the hotel we saw a bank with a particular target audience. Does this mean dementia is more common on New Zealand?
After checking in we walked over the Auckland War Memorial Museum that has a large exhibit on the Maori Native peoples.
Those trees in front of the museum were just starting to bloom. They are called pohutukawa and are special to Maori who also call it the Tree of Life to the Tree of God.
Although much of the Maori exhibit was closed, many parts of the rest of the museum were very interesting - especially the natural history parts about the fauna and flora of New Zealand. Did you know that the Giant Moa bird was over 9 feet tall? Or that in the Mediterranean there were tiny elephants the size of a cow. This museum is highly recommended if you stop by Auckland. Finished up with a what we thought was a 4 course Polynesian dinner (e.g. you pick from a few starters, entrees, and mains), but turned into an 8 course dinner (e.g. they fed you everything on the menu). The entire meal was very good including this chocolate mousse dessert.
Tomorrow an early start at 0630 for our tour.
