Today we took a trip to Nara to visit several temples, world heritage sites, and Nara park.
In 710, Nara was the first permanent capital of Japan so it has a lot of history. We started with Kōfuku-ji, a beautiful temple complex with very large buildings.
Then we walked through Nara Park to Todai-ji. The park is home to over 1500 of sika deer that are considered sacred so cannot be harmed.
You can purchase special deer crackers, shika senbei, for 200 yen to feed them. The deer will bob their heads to beg for food.
Todai-ji temple is a world heritage site that has the world's largest bronze statue of the Buddha Vairocana which is 49ft high.
Next we walked to Kasuga Taisha shrine.
On the walk back to the train station we stopped by the best mochi place in Japan where they make the mochi right in front of you. Warm ,silky, filled with sweet beans - sooo good.
They needed 2 two security people to manage the crowd.
We wrapped up the trip with a short train ride to Horyuji temple, another world heritage site, that contains the world's oldest wood buildings.
