Day 50: Temples 84 - 86

We walked through the city along this river to the first temple of the day.

Along the way we saw a cute school bus and a postal delivery motorcycle. Many of postmen ride a motorcycle.

We took a break for a snack before heading up the mountain to Temple 84, Yashimaji and the Yashima Castle ruins.

This temple had a nice stone pagoda and Shichi-Fuku-Jin (all of them this time).

It has two large statues of the Yashima Tasaburo badgers who are considered to be a god of peaceful families, marriages, and the restaurant business. No idea how those ideas are connected.

On the way down we got a view of the next hill to climb for the next temple. It's located just beneath rocky top. Notice that trail down is so steep, you see my feet in the picture.

Temple 85, Yakuriji, was built right next to the rock. It was the only temple with a major thatched roof building and, like many of the recent temples, combined both Buddhist and Shinto structures.

When got back down to the valley, we stopped for a rest and a local bought us drinks as osettai.

The last temple of the day, Temple 86, Shidoji, was almost lost in the over grown garden. It does have a beautiful pagoda.

For dinner, we ate at a family restaurant that used a robot to deliver the food.

We walked 28.4km today. You can see a map of my tracks here (you may have to refresh the page after a minute to get it to show).  If you have Google Earth, it is faster to download a Google Earth file of my adventure from here.
