Shikoku Pilgrimage Gear - I

You want your gear to be lightweight no more than 10-15% of your body weight.  Since I weigh 170lbs, my ideal pack weight is 17lbs (excluding water).  This is the gear that I ended up using on the pilgrimage.

Starting from the lower left we have:

• (31.5oz) Gossamer Gear Mariposa backpack.  While this is larger than what most folks bring at 60l, it weighs less than my 36l Deuter backpack.
• (10.6oz) The gray bag is a Gossamer Gear Packable Vagabond daypack as there are some days where we will be walking and returning to our lodgings.  Plus it will be useful with shopping.
• (70oz) The top is my Thule pod with my clothes.  As we will be walking in the spring, the weather should be good so I am bringing:
• (1) REI Sahara Pants
• (1) Columbia Silver Ridge Pants
• (1) Montbell Merino Wool Plus Sun hoodie
• (2) Smartwool Tshirts
• (2) Darn Tough wool hiking socks
• (1) Smartwool ankle sock
• (1) Randy Sun waterproof sock
• (2) Arms of Andes wool briefs
• (2) Hankies
• (1) Onsen towel
• (1) Swim shorts
• (35oz) Continuing clockwise, the black bag is for toiletries such as shaver, toothbrush/paste/floss, lotion, deodorant, hearing aid case, brush, nail clippers, tweezers, chapstick)
• (35oz) Next is the pilgrim guide book and name slips (osamefuda).  I still need to get candles, incense, stamp book, conical hat (sungegasa), vest (hakui), scarf (wagesa), lighter, and rosary (juzu) which are included in the estimated weight.
  
• (42oz) Next are baggies with my electrical stuff (charger, cables, headlamp, spare camera battery/SD card); medicines, sunblock, spare glasses, repair tape, multi-tool, and first aid kit
• (49oz) At the bottom on two pair of Altra Lone Peak shoes.  I ended up with these because they are on sale at REI, but any pair of good quality running shoes should work.  I have to bring a second pair because it is next to impossible to find my shoe size (11.5W US) in Japan.
  
• (3.7oz) In the middle is a white Hyperlight camera pod
• (17oz) Next to the camera pod are a blue Adventure World poncho and Mountain Hardware rain pants.
• (47oz) Not shown is my OM System OM-5 camera with a 12-200mm lens, wallet, passport, and Pixel 6 phone

The clothes, shoes, and items in my pockets add up to 77oz so the total weight on my shoulders will be 16.5 lbs.  Pretty good as this includes 2.2lbs of camera gear.
